There are plenty of cases where Apple’s apps could benefit from this kind of in-app search makeover. As the examples in Maggie’s article show, Command-K bars can be genuinely useful to surface hidden commands and allow power users to save time when using complex apps. Think of the typical Command-K bar as a mix of Spotlight, the macOS menu bar, and iPadOS’ keyboard shortcut menu, but as an element that can be invoked from anywhere in an app and dismissed with just a keystroke. I’m intrigued by Command-K bars as a feature that speeds up keyboard-driven interactions on iPad and Mac while at the same time serving as a search box for an app’s own commands. In a way, this visual trend reminds me of pull-to-refresh before it was standardized by Apple and became a native iOS UI component. (On Apple platforms, Things did something similar all the way back in 2018 with a feature called ‘Type Travel’.) It feels like every modern productivity app – especially on desktop – has its own flavor of this interface element nowadays. You’ve probably seen these command bars in apps like Obsidian, Craft, Todoist, Arc, Cron, Notion, and lots of others. You can also search through content like documents, file names, and tasks. You’re not only searching through the available actions in an app. These bars also do double duty as universal search bars. Even if “make” isn’t part of the action name. For example, if I type “make” into a command bar, it’s likely to show me any actions related to creating new items. Fuzzy search can help them find it by simply typing in similar names or related keywords. They don’t even have to remember its exact name. ![]() Maggie Appleton (via Michael Tsai) has written about one of the UI trends I’ve seen pop up more and more lately, and which we mentioned on AppStories several times over the past year: the so-called ‘Command-K’ bars inside apps.Ĭommand bars are command-line bars that pop up in the middle of the screen when you hit a certain keyboard shortcut. They’re also known as ‘command palettes’, ‘command launchers’, or ‘omniboxes’ Traditionally CMD + K, hence the moniker “Command K bars.” But CMD + E and CMD + / have also been strong shortcut contenders. Not all actions support all item types, and each item has a unique set of properties that can be accessed depending on the action, so it’s worth experimenting to understand everything that can be accomplished. When you see ‘items’ referred to in the actions, that could any of the primary components of the app, including projects, headings, tasks, areas, or checklists. When you start exploring Things’ Shortcuts actions keep in mind that they operate on more than just tasks. They work across all of Apple’s platforms and include parameters and predicate filtering, which allow users to build fine-tuned shortcuts that either weren’t possible before those features were added to Shortcuts or would have required users to jump through many more hoops to achieve. It’s a lot to take in at once, but I’ve been playing with these actions since the end of last year, so I thought I’d highlight what each does and share a few shortcuts that I’ve built with them.Īt the highest level, these are the kind of Shortcuts actions I like best. That opens up a much wider variety of possible automations than ever before. Things 3.17 is out for iPhone, iPad, and Mac with greatly expanded support for Shortcuts. However, because I handle most of my email on the Mac and most of what I’d like to see Mimestream incorporate is planned or under consideration for future updates, it’s become how I manage most of my email. The app doesn’t have everything I want from an email client. What drew me back to Mimestream was the app’s native design, tight integration with Gmail, and open roadmap. I’ve been using Mimestream on and off for over a year, returning to it in late January after briefly trying Missive. All but my iCloud email are connected to Gmail, which makes me a pretty strong candidate for Mimestream, which launched this week after a couple years in beta. Two are work-related, and two are personal. ![]() If you spend a lot of time on other devices or have non-Gmail accounts, the call is tougher, but that’s exactly my situation, and I think Mimestream is still the best Mac email choice for most people. It offers the core Gmail experience wrapped in a thoughtfully designed native Mac app. If you primarily use Gmail and work on a Mac, you should try Mimestream now. I’m going to straight-up spoil this review for you at the top.

12/31/2023 0 Comments Wireshark promiscuous mode windows![]() I’m not sure if that’s normal, but as far as I found out Wireshark can’t modify that setting because it doesn’t have the sufficient privileges to do that. Unfortunately, even with npcap installed correctly it doesn’t seem to work if you click it (at least in my case), because the check mark disappears again after a short moment. You can open that dialog from the main menu via “Capture” -> “Options” or by pressing CTRL-K. If you run Wireshark, you’ll notice that you have a “Monitor Mode” checkbox in the capture interface dialog for your WiFi cards. Important: you need to make sure “Support raw 802.11 traffic (and monitor mode) for wireless adapters” is checked: If you recently installed Wireshark 3.x (or later) you should automatically have replaced WinPCAP with npcap, unless you didn’t allow the installer to do that. If you want to know more about the differences between the two, check this comparison. Instead, the npcap libraries are used, which replace the discontinued WinPCAP libraries. Since Wireshark 3.0 came out WinPCAP is no longer the default capture library installed. I use either Alfa cards or, in this case, a NetGear A6210, which I bought at a local electronics store. There’s a matrix available that you can use to check if your card is supported. Unfortunately, not all WiFi cards support monitor mode on Windows. Requirement 1 – a WiFi card with monitor mode The npcap capture libraries (instead of WinPCAP).A WiFi card that supports monitor mode.To get the radio layer information, you need at least three things (other than Wireshark, of course): There’s nothing related to the radio layer, so troubleshooting the wireless connectivity is not possible this way. This concerns me because the whole point of this is to be able to analyze all data going in and out of a program.Figure 1 – “Wireless” capture without monitor modeĪs you can see, the capture looks just like a normal Ethernet capture would. I’m new to voip, docker, wireshark, and networking in general, so figuring this all out has been hard.Īnother concern I had was that I couldn’t find anything when filtering for the specific website that I pinged within the packets in wireshark, just the ip addresses. Based on some research, the best way to do that would be to isolate that program in a docker container and track all of the traffic going in and out of that docker container through wireshark. Here is my end goal, to provide some context: I would like to run a voip program and track all the data that’s going in and out of it to have a better understanding of how that works and how to protect my privacy. Why can’t I see the ip address of the docker container on wireshark? Shouldn’t it have its own interface? ![]() In fact when I check the ip addresses associated with each interface on wireshark, I don’t see it there either. I never see the ubuntu IP show up anywhere during these tests.

I like to think of the derivative and the integral as the two ends of a hammer: one is for pounding in the nails, and the other is for pulling them out. "The derivative is all about isolating a single moment in time, and the integral is all about gathering together an infinite stream of moments to develop a holistic picture," Orlin told Ars. We declared it "a great, entertaining read for neophytes and math fans alike, because Orlin excels at finding novel ways to connect the math to real-world problems-or in the case of the Death Star, to problems in fictional worlds." And now, he has taken on the challenge of conveying the usefulness and beauty of calculus with tall tales, witty asides, and even more bad drawings.įurther Reading The math of why it’s so hard to build a spherical Death Star in spaceĬalculus boils down to two fundamental ideas: the derivative, which is a way of measuring instantaneous change, and the integral, which describes the accumulation of an infinite number of tiny pieces that add up to a whole. It included such highlights as placing a discussion of the correlation coefficient and " Anscombe's Quartet" into the world of Harry Potter and arguing that building the Death Star in the shape of a sphere may not have been Darth Vader's wisest move. His first book, Math with Bad Drawings, after Orlin's blog of the same name, was published last year. That's the goal of math teacher Ben Orlin's new book, Change Is the Only Constant: The Wisdom of Calculus in a Madcap World, a colorful collection of 28 mathematical tales connecting concepts in calculus to art, literature, and all manner of things human beings grapple with on a daily basis. Bringing humor and a sense of play to the topic can go a long way toward demystifying it. Just like you clean your house, your car, or your favorite pair of sneakers, bronze items also need some TLC. They don’t like being drenched or sunburned! Consider using protective coatings, such as wax or lacquer, to shield bronze objects from the environmental forces that can accelerate oxidation. ![]() First, keep your bronze items away from excessive moisture, humidity, and direct sunlight. Now that we understand why bronze turns black, it’s time to discuss how we can prevent or minimize it. How to Take Care of Bronze Preventive Measures It’s like the bronze is putting on its fancy dress to show off its age and uniqueness. And yes, bronze tarnishes! Remember that copper oxide patina we mentioned earlier? That’s what causes bronze to develop its distinctive black or dark brown tarnish. Tarnish, on the other hand, is the discoloration or darkening of metal surfaces caused by oxidation. However, when bronze encounters acidic conditions, it can develop a greenish corrosion called “verdigris.” It’s like bronze’s rebellious phase! Bronze Tarnish So, no, bronze doesn’t rust like our beloved iron buddies. Rust is the result of iron oxidation, and lucky for bronze, it doesn’t contain much iron. Remember, when copper interacts with oxygen in the air, copper oxide forms, giving bronze that distinctive dark coating. ![]() Why Does Bronze Develop a Black Patina?Īh, the million-dollar question! Bronze develops a black patina due to the oxidation of copper on its surface. Sulfur-containing compounds floating around in the air can also react with copper, leading to tarnish and the formation of patina on bronze. Humidity, pollution, and exposure to chemicals act as catalysts for this process.Īh, the perils of the atmosphere! But wait, there’s more. Now, let’s talk about environmental conditions that can speed up bronze oxidation. And voila, that’s how bronze gets its attractive black or dark brown patina. This reaction causes the copper in bronze to combine with oxygen, resulting in the formation of copper oxide on the surface. When it mingles with air and moisture, it starts a chemical reaction known as oxidation. Picture this: bronze, an alloy mostly composed of copper, is like a social butterfly. So, let’s get started! What Causes Bronze to Turn Black? Bronze Oxidation Whether you’re a collector, an investor, or simply a curious soul, understanding why bronze develops a black patina and how to care for it is essential. Hey there! Have you ever wondered why bronze, that beautiful alloy, sometimes turns black?
